As the label and printing industries explore new ways to generate enhanced participation, an FTA subcommittee has gone to great lengths to address the workforce. Women of Flexo (WoF) has worked diligently to promote the hiring and advancement of women in the flexographic printing industry. WoF has ramped up its efforts to continue group growth, which is highlighted by the upcoming Women of Flexo Conference. The second annual event will take place March 13-14, 2024, in Miami, FL, USA. For highlights of last year’s event, click here. The group, which is helmed by chair Emily Kalshoven of MacDermid Graphics Solutions and co-chair Kara Wojnowski of BiOrigin Specialty Products, strives to see increased participation in a wide range of role, from the pressroom and prepress department to roles in sales and management, as well as other positions. “At the 2024 Women of Flexo Conference, attendees can anticipate an engaging experience designed specifically for professionals in the flexography field,” says Wojnowski. “The conference will offer access to valuable resources alongside networking opportunities with peers, mentors, and industry leaders. Participants will gain insights into strategies for overcoming common challenges women face, learn from sessions led by industry professionals, and enjoy a friendly and welcoming atmosphere perfect for fostering professional growth and personal connections. This event promises not only to educate and empower but to provide a memorable experience through a mix of educational sessions and social events, ensuring attendees have a great time while advancing their careers.” There are numerous objectives for WoF, which features four Leadership teams: Marketing & Strategy, Recruitment & Engagement, Mentorship, and Leadership Development. “Our goals are centered around supporting and empowering women within the flexographic industry,” states Kalshoven. “By creating this dedicated network, WoF provides a space for women to connect with their peers, learn about the industry, and explore career advancement opportunities. The focus is on both fostering a strong community and enhancing professional development through learning and mentorship.” Previous meetings and events, including conferences, have been instrumental in achieving these objectives. These events have facilitated tangible connections among the WoF community and offered a wealth of resources and strategies aimed at professional growth. “Attendees have benefited from insights into the flexographic field, access to career development tools, and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with other women in the industry,” says Kalshoven. “The benefits go beyond the events themselves, as women take these resources and experiences back to their daily lives and workplaces, contributing to a more inclusive and dynamic industry.” This group has addressed several hot-button issues throughout the industry, notable workforce. By creating more diversity, companies have access to a greater pool of talented individuals. “A significant trend we’re seeing in flexo is the increasing participation of women across all levels of the industry, from technical roles to leadership positions,” explains Wojnowski. “This shift reflects broader efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the sector, acknowledging the unique perspectives and innovations that women bring to the table. Companies are focusing on creating more inclusive work environments and implementing policies that support work-life balance, professional development, and equal opportunities. “Additionally, there’s a growing presence of women-led initiatives and networks aimed at mentoring and empowering female professionals in the industry,” adds Wojnowski. “These trends not only highlight the evolving landscape of the label and package printing industry but also underscore the critical role that diversity plays in driving creativity, efficiency, and growth within the field.” WoF saw significant momentum in 2023, with multiple achievements and group growth. “We truly found our stride, and with the right people in key positions, WoF was able to engage with our growing community in meaningful ways,” remarks Kalshoven. “Notably, we hosted events specifically aimed at women during major industry gatherings like the FTA INFOFLEX and Fall Conferences, and successfully launched our first annual Women of Flexo Conference at MacDermid Graphics Solutions in Atlanta.” In addition to in-person events, WoF hosted several webinars addressing key industry topics. These included Lunch & Learn webinars, led by the Recruitment and Engagement committee, where industry professionals covered notable topics like: Imposter Syndrome and How To Survive And Thrive In A Male Dominated Workplace. The Leadership Development committee continued to shine a spotlight on women throughout the flexographic field, publishing stories of success and identifying and connecting women with opportunities for advancement that align with their professional goals. “The Mentorship committee remained dedicated to fostering growth and learning through mentorship programs for professionals and students passionate about flexography, providing guidance for those looking for it and a place for flexo experts to share their experience,” comments Kalshoven. “They also hosted regular virtual events where mentors and mentees alike could gather in a casual setting to give everyone the opportunity to get to know their fellow WoF members and make those meaningful connections.” Meanwhile, the Marketing committee acted as the backbone of WoF, communicating its achievements and initiatives to the industry. The committee’s efforts helped establish WoF’s presence and impact, making last year a standout period of engagement, growth, and success for Women of Flexo. In March 2023, the WoF Marketing Committee launched ProjectFLEX at FTA INFOFLEX, a collaborative print project that showcased the talents of women in this field through a partnership with Amor Artis brewing. “This project not only highlighted the capabilities of women in flexography but also served as a beacon of our collective creativity and technical expertise,” adds Kalshoven. In the future, the flexographic industry is poised for significant product development and growth, driven by advancements in technology, sustainability practices, and a deeper integration of digital processes. WoF will play a key role in that drive. “For Women of Flexo, the future appears equally promising, with expectations of increased representation and leadership roles for women within the industry,” says Kalshoven. “As the flexo industry continues to evolve, the contributions of women will become even more pivotal, fostering a culture of diversity, innovation, and resilience. WoF and similar initiatives focused on professional development, mentorship, and networking will continue to expand, empowering more women to excel and lead in flexography. This evolution will not only enhance the industry’s competitiveness but also ensure it remains dynamic and inclusive, reflecting the diverse talent pool that is shaping its future.”
